Cybersecurity enthusiasts have a chance to pit their skills against each other in a Dubai-Police sponsored competition taking place next month.

The Capture the Flag (CTF) competition is designed to encourage the security professionals and/or students to develop ideas and solutions through a cybersecurity problem-solving challenge that encompasses forensics and defence methods.

The challenge, which will take place from 22 to 23 February 2019 at Hub Zero, City Walk, provides an opportunity to apply penetration testing and analytical skills in a real-world cybersecurity scenario. Professional competitors can participate through registering via the challenge’s website to showcase their skills and usage of the latest technologies in defeating cybercrime attacks.

His Excellency Major General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police, highlighted the importance of events such as the “Capture the Flag” challenge in attracting the youth to the fields of science, technology and innovation, while keeping up with the rapid developments in the field of information technology.

“The launch of the second edition of the challenge is in line with the vision of our wise leadership, which gives a top priority to nurturing generations of specialists and professionals in various technological sectors that are able to contribute to building a knowledge-based economy, achieve technological breakthroughs and keep up with changes in the job market," said Major General Al Marri.

As cybersecurity issues have taken centre stage around the globe, organisations are struggling with a worldwide shortage of information security experts. Thus, cybersecurity experts require both theoretical and practical learning opportunities.

Contestants will compete in a virtual environment with the top three contestants walking away with prizes of AED 20,000, 10,000 and AED 5,000 respectively.
