WebNMS Smart Lighting Solution powered by WebNMS loT Platform has helped a city in the GCC reduce OpEx by 40% and empowered centralised control and automation of its city street lighting infrastructure.

Oman based Imtac was picked as the contractor for the lighting project, rolling out a customised smart lighting platform within a relatively short time frame of 3-4 months.

The project comprised an urban lighting network comprising of 2090 lighting poles managed using the WebNMS Smart Lighting Solution, built on a architecture recommended by WebNMS team, says Mukesh Arora, chief operating officer, Imtac LLC, Muscat, Oman.

Challenge

The client managed a large street lighting infrastructure, distributed across a wide geographic region. Switching ON and OFF of lights was automated based on electronic/mechanical timer setting in the switching panel. However, there was no provision to centrally control and monitor the entire, geographically dispersed lighting network. Resetting the schedule, when required, involved manual intervention at each panel.

Timers in the feeder panel required to be adjusted twice a year for seasonal changes in lighting schedules. Other festival or holiday lighting schedules also needed to be manually configured at individual feeder panels.

The WebNMS Smart Lighting Solution has significantly saved energy cost and increased operational efficiency for the municipality.

A team of field technicians had to visit sporadically distributed street lights in and around the city for regular maintenance checks and inspection. This involved a lot of manpower hours and huge maintenance costs. During sudden faults and deviations, there was no provision for immediate notifications and hence repair and restoration was delayed, resulting in longer outage which took about 2-4 working days.

Lights operated in full power mode for the entire period resulted in higher energy consumption and shorter life of luminaries.

The client also had to rely on the energy bills from utilities to access energy consumption data.

Further, there was no centralised monitoring of energy parameters such as power factor, current, voltage, kWh and running hours. These challenges resulted in an increase in manpower, frequent repair and maintenance costs and inefficient energy consumption.

To combat these challenges, the municipality was looking for a system to centrally monitor and manage the health of the street lights, track real-time energy consumption and contribute to the environment through optimal resource usage.

First, it has provided smart control of luminaries for on-off. Additionally, engineers can remotely configure schedules (seasonal changes and holiday lighting).

Today, the city can dim lighting via power line control during certain non-peak hours. They also have energy management of complete lighting.

WebNMS Smart Lighting Solution has significantly reduced the operational costs and energy bills. The solution facilitated centralised monitoring and control of street lights. The deployed loT application orchestrates the entire lighting system, keeping operations in harmony.

With the platform, the municipality now has centralised control of complete lighting from the control centre. Engineers can also identify and pinpoint malfunction or failure in luminaries and feeder panels.

Maintenance has been significantly reduced, resulting in manpower reduction through automation of schedules. It has also reduced maintenance truck rolls.

Centralised control of the lighting system and remote configuration of lighting schedules and dimming schedules has automated the process and brought down manpower requirement by 50%.

Dimming in off-peak hours from 2 AM to 6 AM has contributed to 15-20% savings in energy cost and added to the life of the luminaries.

By proactive monitoring, the municipality has been able to obtain comparative data analytics to study the consumption pattern and drive efficiency through actionable insights.

Arora says the city should see a return on investment in three years’ time, based on energy savings and reduction in manpower cost.
