Qatar to end Qtel monopoly

Telecom authority is to grant a second mobile and fixed-phone licence.

Qatar’s telecommunications authority is to grant a second mobile and fixed-phone licence, which will see the end of the monopoly of the state-owned Qtel, Gulf News reports.

ictQATAR, the Supreme Council of Information and Communications Technology, said in a statement it had started consultation on proposed licences.

“one of ictQATAR’s goals is to foster competition through transparent and non-discriminatory licensing. Comments submitted by companies and other interested parties will be reviewed before final licence texts are issued,” it said.
